An exploration into Calligaris dining tables
What makes Calligaris dining tables different to other brands? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing a Calligaris table over other contemporary tables for your home?
The pros of a Calligaris dining table
One of the most important benefits of a Calligaris dining table is the innovative extension mechanism you’ll find on most models. Calligaris extension mechanisms are very smooth and easy to operate. There’s no elbow grease involved, just a clever design.
Aside from being easy to use, all Calligaris extension mechanisms are completely different and unique to the particular table. In many cases, the designer has turned the extension mechanism into a feature of the table’s aesthetic. It’s not just a useful function. It’s a vital part of the table’s look.
The fact that most Calligaris dining tables are extendable makes them extremely useful for when you’re having guests for dinner and need some extra space. (And those with a Calligaris table in their dining room are generally very keen to show it off — cue lots of dinner parties!)

Another benefit of a Calligaris dining table is flexibility. You’ll find that most models are available in a wide array of sizes, shapes, finishes and configurations. The cornerstone of contemporary furniture is individuality and originality, hence why contemporary furniture makers like Calligaris offer so many options. They recognise that more and more people are abandoning trends and making their own.
We haven’t even mentioned the fact that all Calligaris tables, chairs, sideboards, cabinets, stools and sofas are designed in Italy. For many people this is the most important advantage, since Italy is the fashion, food and furniture capital of the world.
The cons of a Calligaris dining table
A potential con is the fact that Calligaris’s table range mostly consists of extendable tables. Extendable tables are space-savers; they’re only extended when you need them to be. But large families are likely to require the extra space at all times, so a large fixed dining table might suit them better.
Calligaris do offer fixed dining tables, but their range is smaller. One example is the quirky tree-like Acacia Dining Table, which is available in two sizes.
Another reason many people prefer fixed tables is that they don’t want to see any extension mechanisms, visible extension leaves, or a seam down the middle of the table where it opens out. In some circumstances, a fixed table has the aesthetic edge over an extendable one.
But as we explained earlier, Calligaris have tried to get around this by turning many of their extension mechanisms into visual spectacles. This is demonstrated most effectively by the Calligaris Tower Table and, in particular, the Calligaris Orbital Table. A design masterstroke from world-renowned Ferrari designers Pininfarina, the Orbital Table features a glass top with two extension leaves that simultaneously rotate into place, making an attractive elliptical shape. When you rotate them back, they converge and tuck neatly beneath the table top.

For any fan of unusual furniture or gadgets, the Calligaris Orbital Table is a must. You might want to invite your dinner guests early just so they can watch the extension process!
