Headboard types – Pros and Cons

The headboards available at Vale Furnishers fall into two main categories; wooden and upholstered. Which is right for you will depend on your tastes and requirements, however below is a brief overview together with some of the advantages and disadvantages of both:

Wooden Headboards

For simplicity and convenience, a wooden headboard creates a focal point for your bedroom with minimum fuss and maximum style. Durable, versatile, and classically stylish, they are a wise investment for anyone looking to add that all-important finishing touch to a bedroom. Some key advantages and disadvantages are as follows:

Pros:

  • Adds a warm, natural feel to a room
  • Easily cleaned
  • Will not retain allergens such as dust particles.

Cons:

  • Limited colour choices
  • Does not offer much additional comfort.

Upholstered Headboards

For classic style and the ultimate in comfort, an upholstered headboard is hard to beat. With an array of fabrics available to order and a range of superb designs to choose from, you can really get creative. Some upholstered headboards have a softer, fuller feel which blends in superbly with your cushions and bed linen. The increased padding this involves has the additional benefit of providing extra comfort and support when sitting up in bed.

More generally, here are some of the major pros and cons of going down the upholstered route:

Pros:

  • Virtually unlimited choice of fabrics
  • Wide variety of styles available
  • Enhances comfort when sitting up in bed.

Cons:

  • Made to order options have a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks
  • May require specialist cleaning
  • Can retain allergens such as dust particles.

Fitting your headboard

Tempur - Ardennes Adjustable Massage Divan

A well-designed headboard will integrate seamlessly with your bed. By using secure wall fixings, you can adapt the height to match your bed and mattress precisely. In many cases, this is aided even further with a groove or tapered section. If present, holes in your bed can be used alongside special fixings to attach your headrest to the bed itself instead. This technique is mostly suited to wooden headrests, and has the advantage of making it easier to rearrange bedroom furniture.
