Reclining sofa buying guide – Which one?

reclining sofa buying guide

Welcome to the reclining sofa buying guide.

After a long day at work, there’s surely nothing more soothing than sinking into a sumptuous settee for a well-earned rest in front of an open fire or your favourite TV show. But what about a reclining sofa which allows you to fully lie back and relax – even allowing different sections to move independently of one another? And in a range of styles which is every bit as varied as you would expect when looking for a regular sofa? You’ll find all this and more when you visit one of our showrooms to try out some of our superb reclining sofas. In fact, there’s so much to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to begin. With that in mind, we’ve put together a brief reclining sofa buying guide to help you find a reclining sofa which will stylishly add a whole new dimension to your living room or lounge.

Things to consider

Style and size

Whenever you purchase any piece of living room furniture, it is important to carefully consider where you intend to position it. Remember to allow enough room to accommodate your new sofa when fully reclined, and experiment with layouts to decide how best to integrate it with your existing furniture.

To some extent this will dictate the maximum size of sofa which is likely to be suitable for your home. However, by considering a corner sofa with a clever forward-moving mechanism which is intended to be placed against walls, or by opting for a modular system, you could find that you can fit in a larger sofa into your living room or lounge area than you might expect.

Reclining sofas are available is as many different styles as their regular counterparts, from chic contemporary designs to traditional classics, so once you have decided which basic format you are looking for (two seater, three seater, corner sofa or modular system), you will find a huge variety to choose from.

Manual or automatic?

Some of our reclining sofas function using manual mechanisms which are powered by the weight of the person sitting on the sofa, possibly assisted by a spring-loaded component. Manual reclining sofas of this type have the advantage of not requiring any electricity, however they do require a small amount of physical effort to operate.

Other systems utilize electronic controls, which allow the sitter to recline in comfort at the push of a button. These automatic controls can be embedded in an arm of the sofa, or fitted into a special control unit which can be stowed away neatly under a cushion, or perhaps kept in a nearby drawer or on a coffee table. If the control unit is not at hand or the power has been disconnected, many automatic reclining sofas can also be operated manually.

Fabric, leather or suede?

When choosing upholstery for your reclining sofa, one thing to bear in mind is the fact that certain parts of it will be subject to more wear than on a standard model. So it pays to invest in a thicker, more durable material than might otherwise be necessary. Be sure to purchase suitable care products recommended by the manufacturer, and take extra care to apply them regularly, especially in areas of your sofa which are in the vicinity of moving parts.
