Karndean Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring

Luxury vinyl tile flooring, usually shortened to LVT, gives you the appearance of wood, stone or tiles in a practical floor that's easy to live with. Unlike sheet vinyl, it comes in individual planks or tiles, allowing considerable flexibility in appearance and laying patterns.

Karndean LVT is waterproof, comfortable underfoot and straightforward to clean, making it a useful option for kitchens, hallways, living areas and busy households. It's hard-wearing, although not completely resistant to scratches or damage.

Choosing the right type of LVT

Karndean offers different installation systems, including gluedown, loose lay and rigid-core products. These have different requirements, and the right choice depends partly on the room, the existing subfloor and the finish you want to achieve.

Gluedown flooring is particularly flexible for decorative layouts and is bonded to a properly prepared subfloor. Loose lay and rigid-core systems offer alternative fitting methods, but they still require a suitable surface underneath.

At Vale Furnishers, we can help you compare these options and explain which might be appropriate for your property. We offer supply only or a complete supply and fitting service.

Why preparation matters so much

With LVT, what's underneath the flooring is just as important as the product you choose. An uneven, unstable or damp subfloor can affect the finished appearance and cause problems after installation.

We're experienced in assessing subfloors and arranging the necessary preparation, whether that involves smoothing compounds, moisture testing, plywood, primers or appropriate adhesives. Getting this right before fitting starts is essential.

Let's get technical - what's underneath your floor?

When you visit us to discuss LVT, there are several questions we'll ask about your existing floor. You don't need to know all the answers, but understanding why we ask can help you prepare.

Is your subfloor concrete, screed or timber?

Different surfaces need different preparation. A concrete or screeded floor may need moisture testing, smoothing or a suitable primer. Timber floors need to be stable, with loose boards secured and, where necessary, suitable flooring-grade plywood fitted over them. We need to understand what's underneath before recommending an installation method.

How old is the floor, and is it a new build?

New concrete and screeds can retain moisture long after the surface appears dry. Different screed types also have different preparation requirements. Knowing when the floor was laid, and what material was used, helps us establish what testing or treatment may be necessary.

What's currently covering the floor?

Existing tiles, vinyl, timber or other coverings can affect the preparation needed. Some surfaces may be suitable to work over once properly assessed, while others need to be removed or treated first. We won't assume that new LVT can simply be laid over the existing floor.

Do you have underfloor heating?

Karndean flooring can be suitable for underfloor heating, subject to the manufacturer's installation requirements and temperature limits. We need to know whether you have an existing system or are planning to install one, as this can influence the flooring, adhesive and preparation required.

Is the floor level, and are there adjoining rooms to consider?

Uneven surfaces may need levelling, and different flooring systems can result in different finished heights. Door clearances, thresholds and transitions into adjoining rooms are all worth considering before work starts.

You don't need to work out the technical specification yourself. That's what we're here to help with. Bring along your room measurements, details of the existing floor and any information about underfloor heating or recent building work. We can then discuss the most suitable flooring and what needs to happen before it's fitted.
