A plain carpet may look like the simpler choice, but the construction can make a noticeable difference once it is fitted. With Westex, we would first compare the more matt appearance of a twist pile with the smoother finish of a velvet, then consider the pile quality and how heavily the room will be used.
Twist pile has a relatively matt, forgiving appearance, making it a practical option for halls, stairs, landings and living rooms where the carpet will see regular traffic. Many Westex twists use a wool and nylon blend, with the nylon included to add toughness to the construction.
Velvet has a softer, smoother-looking surface and can look particularly smart in a room where that finish is the priority. The trade-off is that it tends to reveal footprints, traffic and marks more readily than a matt twist. That does not make velvet an inferior carpet; it simply means the appearance needs to suit how the room is going to be used.
Where a Westex range offers different qualities, moving up generally gives a longer, plusher pile. That extra depth can feel particularly appealing under bare feet in a bedroom. On a staircase or in another busy area, a shorter pile may make more practical sense. Comparing the qualities physically is far more useful than assuming the highest specification must be the right one.
If you were considering a loop carpet but have cats, a twist is worth comparing because there are no loops for claws to catch and pull. Room use matters too: a family living room, staircase and quiet bedroom may each lead us towards a different combination of construction and pile quality even when you want the same colour throughout.
Our Ash Vale flooring department has a much broader Westex selection than we show as individual products online, so you can compare twists, velvets and different pile qualities properly before choosing. You can also view all Westex carpets or explore our Westex loop pile carpets.
