Choosing a Calligaris bar stool starts with getting the height right for your kitchen island, breakfast bar or counter. A stool for a standard kitchen worktop needs a different seat height from one designed for a higher bar, while an adjustable stool can give you more flexibility.
A breakfast bar used for a quick coffee may need something very different from one where the household regularly eats, works or sits talking. For longer periods, look carefully at the back support, seat comfort and footrest rather than choosing purely on appearance.
The footrest itself is worth trying. If you tend to sit in socks or slippers rather than shoes, a rounded footrest can feel more comfortable beneath your feet than a sharper-edged design.
A swivel can make it easier to get into and out of a stool without continually moving it, although you need enough space around the seat for it to rotate. It is also worth thinking about who will use it: if someone naturally fidgets or spins on a seat, a fixed stool may make more sense.
Gas-adjustable stools can accommodate different counter heights and users, but the mechanism and base can make them considerably heavier to move than a fixed-height design.
As a useful starting point, allow around 50cm of width per stool. The exact requirement depends on the design and the people using it, but this gives each person space to sit and get in and out without the stools feeling crowded together.
