Calligaris Fixed Dining Tables

A fixed dining table can be the better choice when you already know how much space you have and how many people need to sit there. Rather than adding an extension mechanism you may rarely use, you can concentrate on getting the proportions, seating positions, base and finish right for the room.

Start with the space you use every day

Fixed tables work particularly well in a defined dining area or kitchen space where the available footprint already determines the size of table you need. As a starting point, allow around 50cm of table length for each person, then check that there is enough room to pull chairs out and move comfortably around them.

Width matters too. A compact table can be exactly right where space is restricted, but if the room allows a wider top it can provide useful space between diners for serving dishes and everything else that accumulates during a meal.

Choose the base for the way you sit and move around the table

A four-legged table has a familiar, straightforward footprint and can allow chairs to tuck neatly underneath, which is useful where circulation space is limited. The legs do, however, determine where chairs can comfortably be positioned.

A pedestal base removes the corner legs and gives more freedom around the table. That can work particularly well beside a wall or bench where people need to slide sideways into their seats. The trade-off is that some pedestal bases stop the chairs tucking as far underneath when the table is not being used.

Shape changes how the table feels in the room

Alongside rectangular designs, softer shapes can change both the appearance of the room and the way people sit together. A boat-shaped top, for example, curves diners slightly towards one another rather than placing everyone in a straight line, which can make conversation around a larger table feel more inclusive.

Compare the table with the chairs you will actually use

Table dimensions alone do not tell you whether a dining set will be comfortable. The position of the legs or pedestal, the structure beneath the tabletop and the height of the chair once someone is sitting in it all affect usable legroom.

At our Ash Vale showroom we can move different dining chairs to the table you are considering. If occasional extra seats matter, it is also worth comparing our Calligaris extending dining tables before deciding.
