The finishing touch that can change the whole bed

A headboard might be one of the last choices you make when buying a new bed, but visually it can make one of the biggest differences.

The mattress and base determine how your bed feels and functions; the headboard helps determine how the finished bed looks in the room.

Highgrove offers a choice of upholstered designs and fabrics, allowing you to coordinate the headboard with your divan base and create a complete bed rather than simply choosing a mattress and somewhere to put it.

Think about the room as well as the bed

It's tempting to choose a headboard simply because you like the design, but its proportions matter too.

A taller or more substantial headboard can create a strong focal point in a larger bedroom, while something simpler may work better where space is tighter or you don't want the bed to dominate the room.

Think about what's around it as well. Bedside furniture, windows, pictures, sockets and light switches can all influence which size and style works best.

Your choice of fabric makes a difference

Once you've settled on the shape and style, the upholstery gives you another opportunity to personalise the bed.

You might want the bed to blend quietly with your existing bedroom furniture or use the headboard to introduce more texture or contrast.

Where possible, we'd recommend looking at fabric samples in person rather than relying entirely on a screen. Colours and textures can look surprisingly different when you see them properly.

Don't forget how you use your headboard

Appearance isn't the only consideration.

If you regularly sit up in bed to read or watch television, think about how the shape of the headboard will feel behind you. You'll probably still use pillows for support, but some designs naturally lend themselves better to sitting against than others.

Check that your headboard can actually get into the bedroom

This is something that's easily overlooked, particularly when choosing a larger bed.

A floor-standing headboard can be a substantial piece of furniture, especially in king and super king sizes. Before ordering one, it's important to think about the complete route into the bedroom, including your front door, hallways, stairs, landings and any particularly tight turns.

We've seen plenty of homes where the bedroom itself has more than enough space, but getting a large headboard to it is the challenge.

If access is restricted, a strutted headboard can provide a much more practical alternative. Because the headboard attaches to the bed using wooden struts rather than extending all the way to the floor, the overall piece is smaller and can be considerably easier to manoeuvre into position.

It's much better to think about access when you're choosing the bed than discover the problem on delivery day.
