An ottoman bed is one of the most effective ways of adding storage to a bedroom without taking up any additional floor space.

Rather than accessing the space through individual drawers, the mattress platform lifts to reveal a large storage area within the base. That makes an ottoman particularly useful for bulkier items such as spare bedding, duvets, pillows, towels or clothes that you don't need every day.

An ottoman or drawers – which works better in your bedroom?

More storage doesn't automatically make an ottoman the right choice.

Drawers are extremely convenient if you want quick access to smaller things regularly. An ottoman is generally better when you want to maximise the amount of storage available underneath the bed.

The layout of the bedroom matters too.

A bedside cabinet can obstruct a divan drawer. A bed positioned close to a wall may make drawers on one side difficult to use. In those situations, lifting the mattress platform can make much better use of the available space.

This is why we'd normally think about what you want to store and how the bed sits within the room, rather than simply recommending whichever base has the largest storage capacity.

Think about which way the bed needs to open

Opening direction is an important detail that's easily overlooked when choosing an ottoman.

Depending on the Highgrove model and size, different configurations may be available. The important thing is to consider where you'll stand when opening it and what furniture or walls surround the bed.

A layout that works perfectly in one bedroom can be awkward in another.

Manual or powered lifting can change how the bed feels to use

A conventional ottoman uses a lifting mechanism to assist as you raise the mattress and platform. Once you've been shown how it works, it's a straightforward way of accessing a substantial amount of storage.

A powered ottoman takes away more of that physical effort and can be worth considering if ease of operation is particularly important to you.

Check that the base can actually reach the bedroom

This is one of the less exciting parts of buying an ottoman bed, but potentially one of the most important.

A large divan base doesn't bend.

Ottoman bases can be substantial pieces of furniture. Stairs, tight turns, low ceilings, narrow landings and doorways can all create problems that aren't obvious when you're concentrating on the dimensions of the bedroom itself.

Our delivery teams have considerable experience getting beds into customers' homes, so if access looks remotely questionable, talk to us before ordering. We'd much rather identify a potential problem beforehand than discover it when your new bed reaches the bottom of the stairs.

The same consideration applies if you're combining the ottoman with a large floor-standing headboard.
