A bedside chest is one of those pieces of furniture you use every day. It's often the last thing you reach for at night and the first thing you use in the morning, so getting the right one matters.

One of the most important things to think about is height. A lower bed frame will usually work better with a lower bedside chest, while a taller divan may be more comfortable with something higher. Ideally, you want the top to sit at a practical height alongside your mattress, so everything you need is easy to reach.

Think about how much storage you actually need

Not every bedside chest needs to be full of drawers. If you already have plenty of wardrobe and drawer space elsewhere in the bedroom, you might prefer a more open design that gives a lighter look alongside the bed.

Alternatively, if storage is at a premium, those extra bedside drawers can be incredibly useful for keeping smaller everyday items organised and close at hand.

Lots of choice in styles, finishes and materials

You might prefer the warmth of natural oak, a painted finish in a particular colour, or something more contemporary with a ceramic or sintered stone top. The latter can be particularly practical if you like taking a cup of tea or glass of water to bed, as you don't have the same worry about leaving water marks on the surface.
