A Vispring bed is very different from a mattress chosen simply by looking at specifications online.

Handmade using natural materials and Vispring's own pocket spring systems, every mattress is designed to combine support with a deep, luxurious level of comfort. Different models use different spring constructions and combinations of fillings, while a choice of mattress tensions allows the bed to be selected much more closely around the person sleeping on it.

What makes a Vispring different?

One of the ways we often explain Vispring in our showroom is that these are beds which feel as though they have been made rather than simply manufactured.

Each mattress is handmade using carefully selected natural fillings alongside Vispring's pocket springs. As you move through the collection, both the spring construction and the type and quantity of natural fillings can change, creating noticeably different characteristics from one mattress to another.

It means choosing a Vispring isn't necessarily about finding the mattress with the biggest spring count or simply buying further up the range.

A mattress using predominantly wool, for example, can feel quite different from one combining wool, cotton and horsehair. Some models use a single layer of pocket springs while mattresses further through the collection introduce multiple spring layers.

The important question is not simply which Vispring costs more?

It is which Vispring feels best to you?

Soft, Medium, Firm or Extra Firm?

Vispring mattresses are available in a choice of tensions, allowing the underlying spring support to be matched more closely to the individual sleeper.

At Vale Furnishers we can demonstrate Soft, Medium, Firm and Extra Firm tensions across our showroom displays.

We normally use body weight and build as a useful starting point when recommending a tension, but we don't believe a chart should make the final decision.

How you sleep matters too.

Someone who sleeps predominantly on their side needs their shoulder and hip to settle naturally into the mattress, while a back or front sleeper may need something quite different.

That's why we ask customers to lie on a mattress exactly as they would at home rather than simply sitting on the edge and deciding whether it feels soft or firm.

For couples with different requirements, many Vispring mattresses can also be made with different tensions on each side, helping both people find the support they prefer without necessarily having to compromise.

How we help you choose a Vispring

When someone is new to Vispring, one of our favourite starting points is the Vispring Regal Superb.

We display the Regal in all four mattress tensions, which makes it an excellent way of understanding just how much difference the spring tension can make.

Once we've established the most appropriate starting point, we'll normally ask you to lie in your usual sleeping position and spend some time relaxing properly.

We're looking at things such as how your hips and shoulders are settling into the mattress and how naturally your spine is being supported.

Sometimes we'll even take a photograph from behind while you're lying on your side. It's surprisingly useful: you may be able to feel that one mattress is different, but seeing your own sleeping position can make the difference between tensions much easier to understand.

We also encourage customers to use a pillow similar to the one they sleep on at home. Pillow height and mattress comfort work together, so changing one can alter how the other feels.

There is no substitute for taking your time.

Sitting on the edge of a mattress or bouncing on it for a few seconds tells you very little about how you are actually going to sleep on it.

The mattress and divan work together

With Vispring, it's also important to consider what sits underneath the mattress.

A Vispring divan isn't simply a timber box covered in fabric. Its sprung construction is designed to work alongside the mattress, allowing the complete bed to respond together.

Put the same mattress onto a much firmer platform and it can feel noticeably different.

That doesn't mean you cannot use a Vispring mattress on a suitable bedstead or existing base, but it does mean the base should form part of the conversation when you are comparing mattresses.

For customers choosing a complete Vispring bed, there are numerous options for divan heights, legs, castors, fabrics and drawer storage, along with an extensive collection of upholstered headboards.

Natural materials – and natural settlement

The generous natural fillings that give a Vispring mattress much of its character also mean it behaves differently from a mattress predominantly made from man-made foams.

Over time, those fillings will settle.

This is a normal part of the mattress ageing and adapting to the people sleeping on it rather than necessarily being a sign that something has gone wrong.

Regularly turning and rotating the mattress, particularly while it is new, helps the fillings settle more evenly.

It's something we think customers should understand before they buy. A handmade natural mattress shouldn't necessarily look completely untouched several years later – it should look like a bed that has been slept in and cared for.

Does a Vispring mattress sleep hot?

Natural materials are another reason many customers are attracted to Vispring.

Rather than relying on dense memory foam, Vispring mattresses use breathable natural fillings which help manage heat and moisture as you sleep.

Of course, no mattress can make a hot bedroom cold, and bedding makes an enormous difference too. Choosing an appropriate duvet and bed linen for the season remains important.

For customers who particularly dislike the enveloping warmth associated with some memory foam mattresses, however, the construction of a Vispring can provide a very different sleeping experience.

Moving up through the Vispring collection

As the Vispring collection develops, spring construction and natural upholstery become increasingly sophisticated.

That doesn't automatically mean everybody should buy the most expensive mattress they can afford.

Comfort is extremely personal.

One customer may immediately appreciate the difference created by a different spring system or additional natural upholstery, while another may genuinely prefer the feel of a mattress considerably earlier in the range.

There inevitably comes a point with any luxury product where improvements become increasingly refined. Whether those differences justify the additional investment is something only the person sleeping on the mattress can decide.
