An extending dining table gives you space for extra guests without keeping a larger table in your room every day. The important thing is choosing one that works comfortably both closed and extended.
At Vale Furnishers, we have 50 dining tables demonstrating different extension mechanisms in our four-storey Ash Vale showroom, with further sizes, materials and configurations available to order.
Start with the size you'll use most often. For additional guests seated fairly closely, allow approximately 50-60cm of table edge per person. For comfortable everyday dining, we'd suggest 60-70cm or more. Wider chairs, especially those with arms or swivel mechanisms, may need extra space.
Check the table's fully extended length against your room measurements, allowing space to pull out chairs and move around. If the room doesn't allow for expansion, a fixed dining table may be more practical.
Some tables open in the middle, with leaves rising from beneath the top. Others extend from one or both ends, keeping the main tabletop free from extension joins when closed. Leaves may lift, fold or rotate into position depending on the mechanism.
Most of our extending tables store their leaves internally; only a smaller number need separate storage. Consider how often you'll extend the table, whether you need intermediate sizes and which mechanism you find easiest to use.
On some tables the legs move outwards as the top extends, preserving useful legroom. Others have central bases that affect where chairs can be positioned. Check the extension joins, table legs and seating positions at each size, particularly if you're adding places at the ends.
We display extending tables in wood, ceramic and other finishes. Most designs are available in alternative sizes, many offer different tabletop materials, and some are also available as fixed-top versions.
